IDET or intradiscal
electrothermal annuloplasty therapy is a pain management treatment,
as well as a simple technique, elected by patients who are
experiencing back pain at the Atlas Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine, located on
Park Avenue South @31st Street in Manhattan, New York. IDET (ntradiscal
electrothermal annuloplasty) provides a state of the art alternative
to other surgical procedures for patients who suffer from back pain
caused by certain types of disc problems.
IDET (intradiscal
electrothermal annuloplasty therapy) is a simple and minimally
invasive outpatient surgical procedure performed by spine surgeons
to treat patients with chronic back pain that is caused by tears or
small herniations of their lumbar discs
.In summary, the IDET
procedure involves passing a flexible catheter through a needle into
the source of your painful disc. Wires inside the catheter then heat
the disc wall resulting in toughening as well as desensitization of
the disc which results in the loss of the sensation of your pain.
Before an IDET procedure, you will be given a sedative and a
local anesthetic. Using "live" X-ray imaging (fluoroscopy), a doctor
inserts a hollow needle containing a flexible catheter and heating
element into the spinal disc. The catheter is positioned in a circle
around the inside of the disc, and is then slowly heated to about
194 °F(90 °C). The heat is meant to kill the nerve fibers and
toughen the disc tissue, sealing any small tears. Antibiotics,
either intravenous or injected into the disc, are used to prevent a
disc infection. You will experience no discomfort from the
intradiscal electrothermal annuloplasty (IDET) procedure.
If you are interested in a IDET (intradiscal electrothermal
annuloplasty) to manage your pain or treat your back pain the spine
doctors of the Atlas Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine of Manhattan, New York and Millburn, New Jersey would be
