The spine doctors of Atlas Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine, located on Park Avenue South at 31st Street in
Manhattan, New York and at our office in Millburn, New Jersey can provide pain management and pain treatment
for your herniated disc or sciatica pain.
Herniated discs represent the most common diagnosis for severe back
pain and sciatica (leg pain). Discs are small cushions that lie
between the individual vertebrae of our spinal columns.
A variety of pain treatment or pain management therapies are
available for patients suffering from sciatica pain or herniated
disc pain.
Depending upon the results of the physical examination by your
doctor and the severity of your condition, your doctor may offer you
two forms of pain management and pain treatment. The first common
treatment is conservative therapy including exercise, pain
medication, and physiotherapy. If conservative therapy does not
bring enough pain relief, other procedures may be considered
including the most common form of herniated disc and/or sciatica
treatment called epidural injections (nerve blocks).
Epidural injections or
infusions of a catheter may be recommended by your doctor if you
have severe leg pain. These are injections of corticosteroid into
the epidural space (the area around the spinal nerves), injected by
a doctor with special training. The initial herniated disc
treatment may be followed by one or
two more injections at a later date, and should be done as part of a
comprehensive rehabilitation and pain management and treatment
program.
Percutaneous Discectomy may also be a necessary form of pain
treatment for your condition. A Percutaneous Discectomy is a
minimally invasive outpatient
surgical procedure to remove herniated disc material. Using a local
anesthetic and an x-ray fluoroscopy for magnified video for
guidance, a small specially designed probe is inserted
through the skin of the back, between the vertebrae and into the
herniated disc space. Very small surgical attachments are the sent
down the hollow center of the probe to remove a portion of the
offending disc. The microsurgical attachments can also sometimes be
used to push the bulging disc back into place and be used for the
removal of disc fragments and small bony spurs.
