Intrathecal Programmable  Pump / Spinal Cord Drug Delivery via Intrathecal Drug Delivery Therapy is a pain management treatment, as well as a simple technique, elected by patients who are experiencing back pain at the  Atlas Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine, located on Park Avenue South @31st Street in Manhattan, New York and at our office in Millburn, New Jersey. Intrathecal drug delivery places medication directly into the cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds the spinal cord to eliminate pain. Morphine delivered directly to the intrathecal space is particularly effective because it does not have to circulate systemically to reach the CSF and the dorsal horn of the spinal cord. As a result, much smaller doses are needed to alleviate pain.

The potential benefits of intrathecal drug delivery include:

* Pain relief for patients whose pain has not been controlled with more conservative therapies
* Reduction in side effects such as nausea, vomiting, sedation and constipation
* Decreased need for oral analgesia / oral pain medications
* Improved physical assessment and increased ability to perform activities of daily living

Intrathecal Programmable  Pump / Spinal Cord Drug Delivery via Intrathecal Drug Delivery Therapy eliminatespain by delivering pain medication to the intrathecal space surrounding in the spinal cord area. Because this type of therapy delivers pain medication directly to the receptors in the spinal cord, smaller doses of medication are required to gain relief.

The Intrathecal Programmable  Pump system consist of a pump and catheter, both of which are surgically placed under the skin. The pump is implanted in the abdominal area, just above or below the belt line. A thin, flexible tube, called a catheter, connects to the pump and is tunneled under the skin to the site where medication is to be delivered. The pump releases the medication at the set rate, and the medication flows from the pump, through the catheter to the site of delivery in the intrathecal space.

If you are interested in Intrathecal Programmable  Pump/Spinal Cord Drug Delivery to manage your pain or treat your  pain the spine doctors of Atlas Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine of Manhattan, New York and Millburn, New Jersey would be happy to see you for a consultation and help you learn about the treatment options available to you.
